How does Buspirone (Generic Buspar) work?

How does Buspar work?
Buspar’s active ingredient buspirone is a medication in the class of drugs known as anxiolytics. The work action of this particular class is not exactly clear, but buspirone is believed to exert its effect by modifying the release of certain neurotransmitters in the brain. This action includes an increase in the concentration of the neurotransmitters noradrenaline and dopamine and a suppression of the action of serotonin and acetylcholine. This dual effect is believed to lead to relief from Anxiety.

Side Effects of Buspar
As this drug works in the brain, there are bound to be certain Buspar side effects, which commonly appear in the form of drowsiness, blurred vision, restlessness, nausea, upset stomach, insomnia, and trouble concentrating. These are all the milder Buspar side effects that rarely turn dangerous. Then there might also be certain severe Symptoms such as fainting, feeling lightheaded, uneven heartbeat, Depression, mood swings, unusual thoughts, and lack of coordination in body movements. These Buspar side effects might be the result of an overdose or allergic reaction and call for quick medical help.

Guidelines before Taking
As a prescription medication, Buspar should be taken only under medical guidance and strictly as per your doctor’s instructions. Buspar and its generic alternatives are only meant for prescription to adults and should not be administered to children below 18 years of age. Alcohol should not be consumed before or after a Buspar dosage as it could lead to severe side effects.

While Buspar is generally considered safe during pregnancy, women should not take it without fully discussing the risks with their doctor. This medication should not be taken within 14 days of having taken a MAO inhibitor as the combination could have potentially fatal side effects.

What are the common dosages of Buspar?
Buspar comes in the form of tablets containing 5mg and 10mg of buspirone respectively. The common dosage regimen of Buspar lasts for four weeks; anything beyond that should only be with your doctor’s approval.

Difference between Brand Buspar and Generic Buspirone
Branded Buspar cream contains Buspirone, which is also the main ingredient in generic alternatives. So in terms of effectiveness, both medications are same. But since generics do not carry a brand name, they are cheaper in price and also more widely available.
