Which meds are good for helping with BOTH attention and Anxiety Problems?

I experience many of the Symptoms of both General Anxiety Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder. Which meds are good for combatting this combination?

I have an appointment to speak with a Psychiatrist on Wednesday. What do you think he’ll prescribe?

Your doctor will probably prescribe Zoloft, or Paxil, for anxiety, and adderall for the ADD.

However, each person reacts differently to these newer drugs, so I hope your doctor will start you on a low dose and go up from there.

Drugs are not the entire answer here though. Take it from one who has spent 9 years fighting Ptsd, Panic Attacks, and agoraphobia, and has been prescribed every medication under the sun.

Exercise is very important. Exercise produces the same kind of endorphins that anxiety meds do. A 20-30 minute walk daily will really help, and you may find you don’t even have a need for an Anxiety Medication.

Get a dog if you don’t have one—they are great walking partners. As a matter of fact, my dog is a certified service animal that goes everywhere with me. The love and devotion they give is endless. My golden retriever will even come to give me a hug when I have a “melt-down.”

A well-qualified therapist can help you change your thinking patterns so that the Anxiety Is minimized. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) are positive, proven types of therapy. Be sure to check the credentials of your therapist. It’s silly to pay someone just to sit and talk to them. You need a program such as these specific therapies.

Educate yourself about these conditions so you will be able to manage your health care to a certain extent. Some doctors out there combine numerous drugs to make “cocktails,” as they call them. At one time they had me taking so many drugs that I was a zombie.

A couple of good books, recommended by my therapist are:

July 31, 2013 – Eugene, Oregon — Pearl Nutrition has just released a natural herbal supplement for Treating Depression And Anxiety. 5-HTP is a mild herbal supplement derived from an African woody climbing shrub that stimulates production of serotonin and melatonin in the brain. Taking 5-HTP for Anxiety Is a great natural alternative to chemical anti-Anxiety Medications. It's non-addictive, non-habit forming, and you can take it or not take it as needed without withdrawal Symptoms.

If you're thinking of taking 5-HTP for depression, consult your doctor. Although some studies have shown that it enhances the performance of some prescription anti-depressants when the two are taken together, it interacts badly with many chemical anti-depressants. Taking 5-HTP for Anxiety And Depression is great if you're going the herbal route because it can be taken with other natural cures like kava kava and mugwort.

More people are choosing to treat their mental and physical health issues naturally with very positive results. Not only are herbal treatments easier on the body, but it's also an interactive way to learn about herbs, where they come from, and how they work. It's also an engaging avenue to learn more about yourself and your body.

5-HTP can also treat seasonal depression, alleviating the blues, and enhancing your mood in a mild and non-habit forming way. 5-HTP and anxiety don't get along. Serotonin and melatonin, which are produced in the brain by taking 5-HTP, heighten your mood and induce relaxation naturally. Melatonin helps you get genuinely restful sleep, and serotonin facilitates feelings of happiness and well-being. Acting as a natural mood enhancer, 5-HTP can take the anxious edge off and brighten your perspective.

Question about getting emotional support/ psyciatric service animal?

I have Severe Anxiety & Depression. How can I get my doctor to write a perscription for me to get an emotional support/ psyciatric service animal? And how do I get my landlord to accept it?

SERVICE DOG: (Including Psychiatric Service Dogs) Provide specialized task assistance to qualified disabled individuals. You MUST be disabled under ADA standards to have a service dog. Having a condition, a Doctors note, being on social security disability, having a disabled plate/placard for your car etc … does NOT mean you are disabled under ADA standards. If you are not disabled under ADA standards, you do not qualify. If you don’t qualify, no service dog.

Second, there must be a task or tasks that the dog can be trained to perform, that you cannot do yourself, that is directly related to your disability, that’ll mitigate your disability. It must be something you cannot do that is directly related to your disability, that a dog can be trained to do for you.

Service dogs are highly trained animals that, along with their disabled handler, are granted nearly unlimited access under the law. Because of this these dogs must be highly trained and socialized. The punishments for having a fake one (either a pet you’re claiming to be a service dog or having a service dog but being unqualified to have one) are severe. It’s federal fraud, punishable by high fines, jail time and confiscation of your dog – forever.

If you live in rental property, you must submit to the landlord a letter requesting accommodation. He may or may not ask for a letter from your doctor stating that you are disabled and in need of a service animal.

You wait for approval before bring your animal onto the rental property.

Regarding Psychiatric Service Dogs:

“It is not enough to have a Mental Illness to qualify as a person with a disability under the ADA. According to the NIMH, 26.2% of adults in the U.S. suffer from a Mental Illness in any given year, but only 6% are severely mentally ill. So more than three quarters of those with a diagnosed mental illness are not disabled by that illness and would not qualify to use a service animal even if they would benefit from one.”

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMAL (ESA): Provide comfort, support and companionship. You must be mentally disabled our have a mental condition that is severe enough to be disabling.

You must be under the ongoing care of a mental health professional. A regular Dr will not do.

Your mental health professional must decide that an ESA is the best for your ongoing treatment plan and must prescribe the ESA. You don’t decide – they do.

The mental health professional must write you a note prescribing an ESA.

Take this note to your landlord, along with a letter requesting accommodation, or send it registered mail.

Wait for approval before bringing your ESA onto the rental property. If the animal shows signs of aggression or unduly disrupts the other tenants, the approval can be revoked.

An ESA can be any domestic animal within reason, while service animals can only be dogs, and in special situations miniature horses, only. ESA’s require no special training. Under the law they are pets. They do not have any special public access with their handler and they are not protected under ADA law.
